Melbourne Psych & Eats

I guess I could somewhat sum up my Melbourne experience similar to my experience of Asian psychiatry conference whilst I was there; eye-opening but not too surprising.

Coming to an Asian psychiatry conference seems like a big jump from my medical journey, not that I can't handle the highly technical info, but more like I'm the youngest medical student that other attractive Asian psychiatrist kept flirting on. I guess being a graduate from Australia or NZ does have its own prestige. There were no other medical student I could identify there, so everyone calls everyone else 'doctor'.

I was minisculy reluctant to come back to my favourite city in the world, Melbourne. I was traumatised from the last incident I was here; the tram incident. I was searching for a guitar shop about 5 years ago. I asked the information desk from the central train station in town about how to get there. The man was helpful and even said which ticket I should purchase. So I did.

Little did I know that the shop is located between 2 zones of tram fees allocation. When the tram passed the zone, a tram-officer-concealed-in-civilian-clothes revealed himself in the cart and asked about my ticket. I had the wrong ticket. I was trying to explain my situation and why I purchased that ticket. I also explained that I was a tourist with my passport and NZ medical school card. Annoyingly, the officer didn't believe me, especially with my natural OZ-NZ accent. Why? Well, I have this thing that I always tour around the world looking like a student - jeans, indie tops and satchel. It serves me well in Europe from the scam artist, muggers or rip-offs. Unfortunately, that day I was stopped in front of Macquire University. Then, the officer tried to confirm my background, I gave him my cousin's number. My cousin, who is a Melbournian, loved to make excuses and lies to tram officers. She automatically lied on the phone that I was an Australian University student, whilst I only wanted her to tell the truth. That didn't serve me well; fined $250AUD from a lie that my cousin told with her good intention.

There you go. My little trauma.
If you don't know me personally, I am pretty damn awesome law-abiding non-permanent resident. I never get a single detention in school. I never have a single ticket for my driving. You get the idea.

Prior to that I visited Melbourne every year. Because... well just like I re-discovered it again this time, Melbourne is a damn best city I ever seen in the world. After my numerous travels to Seoul last year, which left me with an impression of the most romantic place in the world (especially in Autumn), I'd like to take that back and return it to Melbourne. It's not as grandly designed and vintaged like a fine European city, but it's good enough and realistic for me to want to live there. Being a winter lover, Melbourne is at its beauty peak during the chill. I was a little bit disappointed on how warm it was this time. However, the leafless greyish olive-green branches with the grey concrete settings really soothed my soul. I didn't sight-see around much on this visit, 'cos I've been here too many times.

Since I began bloggin', I was really surprised by the number of Melbourne foodie bloggers I've met. Over time, they did feed my ego and cravings in to trying out the Melbourne I have missed out. I would like to extent my huge thank you's to Leaf@ the indolent cook and Viv @ Green Cilantro for the amazing pointers and reminders.

I couldn't try as much restaurants as I wanted but I wasn't left with a feeling of being left-out, because I was surprised as well as a little unimpressed. I don't review restaurants a lot because I just don't, but if you'd like to know a little bit of what I think:

Movida, it's my top place-to-try pending on my mind (thanks to Leaf for the reminder, I almost forgotten). I saw lots of buzz about the place a few years back. It did live up to my expectation. Good service. The food was excellent BUT salty. Sadly disappointed with the paella that was wayyyy tooo salty and with seafood that wasn't fresh. Try the tomato sorbet with anchovies tapas, a definite highlight! 7.2/10(should have been around 9 but the salt was aching).

LuxBite, I guess I'm a little biased as a pastry chef that my Macarons are better. So not overtly wow'ed there. I think they do need more selection to call themselves a dessert place. But definitely try the Watermelon meringue/alaska, it's right up my alley! Service was good. 7.5/10

Hutong Dumpling Bar, my cuz tried to get me in this place on Sunday but the bookings were full until Thursday night. I say 'worth the wait!' Service was excellent for a Chinese restaurant (unsure about the smile the waitress kept giving me, and my cuz told me I should ask her out). Food was up to the standard, and slightly better in some department. Try the pan-fried dumpling, not to shabby for a place in Melbourne! 8.4/10.

ChinChin, it's like no. 1 on urban spoon's hottest place. The service and decor were urban retro with a touch of emo couture and awkward interactions. We had a lot of freebies sitting on the kitchen tables, which were nice - ever nicer than the paid ones maybe. The Asian-to-Asian fusion works somewhat, leaving me with a Malay-Vietnamese impression judging from the mild spiciness and Malaysian (high) level of coconut creaminess. Lets just say I would bring an Asian girl there, but not most Asian parents because they wouldn't get it. Truly disappointing white rice (basic first, fusion second). Despite the excessive coriander for my liking, do try the duck soup! It's awesomely balanced for a fusion. 7.4/10.

Hardware Societe, surprised by how crowded it was during non-office hours (thanks to Viv for letting me know a great brunch joint, really want to try Attica but yeah...). It's set like on a cupcake-like-establishment-in-your-urban-suburb. I couldn't decide what was the best. I am a breakfast person and ate everything so... 7.8/10

My ratings are based on how close it is to one Michelin star in August 2011 (10/10=1 star). Sorry no pictures, I just don't find taking photo as a natural process of my restaurant fine-dining experience. I have eaten in other places but I think this is enough.

My cousin, she is pregnant at the moment. But pregnant or not, my cuz and her hubby are not foodies in simile to a cliche` Asian parents; 'tasteless, small expensive food?!' So I ate mostly with my old friends here.

I think being here this time around gave me an insight into the cause and effect of psychiatric things, especially depression- a little topic I'm keen on. So much inspirations, perhaps I could do a side medical research about food and mood; publish them in a book one day. Also, I am now more confident that being out-of-restaurants for many years, my food skills are still up to scratch for my future culinary aspirations.

I'd like to thank all my Melbourne friends here (hope you all like the best water in the world from NZ). Thanks again to Viv & Leaf for giving me hints for the start of my travel!

Oh by the way!
"Dear Dr Wibawa,
On behalf of Capital & Coast, Hutt Valley and Wairarapa District Health Boards, I am pleased to offer you an appointment as a First Year House Officer at Capital & Coast, Hutt Valley and Wairarapa District Health Boards..."

THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR BLESSINGS AND PRAYER!

  1. You shouldn't have to pay the fine! You don't even have an Australian address, how're they going to track you down? And if they do they'll find out you'd been telling the truth... ;)

    Sorry to hear your restaurant experiences were a bit mixed, too. But good to know that you still had some delicious food!

    And congratulations on the appointment! :D

  2. Congratulations!!! I am very happy for you! That is awesome that you got the job.
    I'm sorry about the fined. Like you, I always play by the rules... most of the times.
    My friend is currently living in Melbourne and loving it. I wish to visit one day.

  3. Congratulations! Really happy for you! Your tram story was so funny. For someone who plays by the rules, getting fined and accused like that is just nightmarish. Since you sing praises of Melbourne here, I'm tempted to go there for a visit one day. It has never been on my list of travel destination must-visit. Been to the Gold Coast and have yet to visit my aunt in Sydney. Will make Melbourne a stopover.

  5. I bought wrong tram tickets once. Thank god I didn't get caught. :P AUD250 fine is hefty.

    Congrats on the appointment. :)

  6. Congrats on the new appointment, Dr Wibawa. So happy for you:-)

  7. You shouldn't have paid that bloody fine! Just speak gibberish and they won't get you! Anyway, chin chin can be pretty inconsistent i feel. Some of my foodie friends said that the food is too salty. Others said that it was awesome. My sister the rice queen loves the rice. I'm so sorry that your rice was disappointing!!

    And are you back to NZ already? :)

    I prefer Hong Kong over Melbourne. :D

  8. Great pics Pierre. It's been a very long time since I last visited Melbourne, and I didn't had quite a good time there ~~ there were too many houseflies. And the farmer's market was closed. I love the strawberries and lavender farms though. They were awesome!
    I look forward to reading more of your traveling adventures!

  9. @Leaf,
    Yeah... well if they can't track me down, the fine will accumulate enough to make it to the immigration. I would like to keep my options open to move up if chances permit :)
    The restaurants are just fine, the way I've imagined them to be. No need to be sorry. In fact, Thank you heaps for the tip! Next time I hang around Melbourne for longer, I try more of your list ;)

    @Dom,
    Oui! :D

    @Michael,
    Cheers heaps bro! I actually play not-to-get caught, if I hang around rules 100%, I'll never get to where I am (I'm not talking about cheating tho ;)Let me know what you think of Melbourne if you ever come down. (better yet, come to NZ.. worth the travel 100x more).

    @Germaine,
    Yay! Thank You!
    Melbourne is for European lover to live in, not to visit. Visit Europe or NZ is better, but Melbourne is about lifestyle. Travelwise, Melbourne can be rather dull. If you ever make it to Sydney and hate it, then maybe Melbourne is for you :)

    @Viv,
    Yup, next time attica ay!
    The menu sounds really inspiring and jealous. Now I am thinking so much about cooking because of that.
    I didn't have any tram Drama this time around tho! Hahaha. Thank You!!

    @Amy,
    It was a real bad bad luck... Shame for me. Thanks for the kind wishes ;)

    @Kay,
    I think I need to work on my nick name as a doc. I'm thinking of Dr W, what do you think? Hahaha, easier for the western patients to digest. Thank You Kay!

    @Michelle,
    I tried the multiple personality thing, didn't work. I had a persistent and damn annoying officer that day.
    Definitely disappointed with the rice, gritty and dried. Hmmm, I'm sure that's not what your sis like. Wonderin..., do you like the Chinese/Indian harder rice or Korean/Japanese softer sticky ones?
    I am back now to the best city in NZ, if only there were more shops and restaurants here, then it'd beat Melbourne by 1000billion miles.
    I am considering HK as a side-trip from Seoul next month, had to consult with my bank account first tho;P

    @Pei Li,
    You must have been there during summer? I hate OZ summer. Hot and too many flies everywhere, that's why I'm well tucked in down in NZ.
    That's unfortunate that the market was close. It's not as awesome as Asian market tho, so don't feel to bad about it. I'll keep you posted for more! ;)

  10. Yeaayyy...you got the job! Haha, sorry I'm more excited about that and about your pregnant cousin than the restaurant reviews (thanks but unfortunately I won't be in Melbourne anytime soon). As for the unfortunate incident with the tram ticket guy, I'm afraid I can't offer you any advice. I've received tickets everywhere for my driving...NY, Germany, London, etc...mostly for err, being in a 'hurry' and parking where I shouldn't! ;-)

  11. Was therein the summer of 81...the horrible flies...and so hot I hardly ventured out of the motel room - outside, I felt like a turkey roasting in the oven - a turkey buried under a swarm of flies. Your cousin's going to have a duaghter?

    P.S. No photos of the restaurants and the food?

  12. You should have called on me! I would have brought foodies galore to dine with you!!

    ReplyDelete
  13. @Maya,
    Yap! Yay!!!
    I think littlehungryheart has only 1-2 restaurant review. Only for special occasions I guess. So you are a little bit of a mad cow on the loose huh? Hahaha. I drive like mad too but madly cautious as well (for the cops ;P)

    @Arthur,
    I wasn't even born then! Hahaha.
    Really2 hate oz summer ay. I prefer to stay indoor with 10 AC running. How do you know if my cuz's having a gal?
    No photos, just a little unnatural to take photos whilst enjoying the restaurant and company.

    @I-hua,
    Will do next time. I'm sure it won't be soon before long :D

  14. I love hearing your stories of travel as the only time I have left the US is for my honeymoon to Mexico! I will live vicariously through you until my kiddo's grow up a little more and we set off to explore the world together!

  15. Yeah, if anyone mentioned Melbourne, it just remind me of great restaurant chains and awesome gourmet.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Ugh, the fines! You definitely shouldn't have to pay, but hey... maybe look at the bright side and see it as a souvenir? (ha, a stretch, i admit).

    ReplyDelete
  17. @Dee,
    I would love to go to Mexico and eat and eat and eat. Melbourne is not a much of a visiting sort of place tho. I think you should go to Sydney for that. Melbourne is a mellow place, somewhere to stay :) I do hope you get to embark on an amazing journey soon!

    @Alice,
    It's mostly over-selling chit chat, as most women love to do ! Hahaha. But some are true tho.

    @Yasmeen,
    A souvenir of memory. I think looking back, I liked the adrenalin rush in a peculiar sort of way. Definitely lesson learnt on a bitter bite!

  18. Congratulations are in order then, I am glad you got the job you want!

    To me a good fried rice consist of three things: Temperature, oil and (hard) a day old rice, everything else is not really matter.

  19. Dr W sounds good or even Dr P or Dr Pierre:-)

    ReplyDelete
  20. @Katherine,
    Thank You!
    I guess what fancies me don't always fancies you. But your points are rather too true.

    @Kay,
    ;D Seems like most patients prefer the last. "Oh! Dr Pierre, that's right the non-French Asian Indonesian doctor!"

    ReplyDelete
  21. I was thinking the same if you called yourself Dr Pierre and the patient had never seen you before their first expression on their face when you walk into the room would be priceless!

    In college I had a teacher named Mr Yamazaki which is my maiden name. My jaw dropped when I saw that he was a middle aged white guy. He had taken his Japanese wife's name because she didn't have a brother to carry on the name. He turned out to be a very strange man...not in a good way, but I did end up getting an A in the class...lol

  22. That's why I'd like to keep it short... W. Hahaha... for more open mind.
    I had an ex once, she was a huge feminist. She didn't want to change her last name. I even consider of changing mine to hers, but then again, Wibawa means 'honour and noble'(ask any Indonesian what they look for in a leader... 99% of the time, it'd be 'wibawa')... so I kept mine and ditch her (not becos of this issue of course ;P)
