Hot Chocolate: Last Sunday Supper

Last Sunday of being a medical student/chef in my own kitchen. It shall be epic. It shall be awesome. It shall be a classic.

We need bad-ass colossal line-up to showcase what the last stretch's all about. The whole Sunday started with Edi who kindly fulfilled my mum's wish to get pictures of my medical action. She said to me,"You know it's been a dozen years you're not home. It's kinda nice to see how you turn out in the end."

The Sunday Menu

Of course a man's gotta eat. So I invited Edi for a dinner and just so happen the busy-saving-the-world Adri was available to bite in and have a shoot off with Edi. I have cooked a truly disappointing, from a situationally-coerced-by-someone-to-cook, Spaghetti Carbonara 5 years ago. Thankfully Adri didn't remember much except that he said it was good, well I was set to stamp the record straight to 'amazing'. Adri is like one of those people whom you can't never hate and never get tired of. Though I never worked with him, I do consult a lot of pharmaceutical dilemma with him. I also invited friends who was featured here a little more than a month ago; Edi & Surya. So with Edi, Adri and Surya to freeze the epicness to a mesmerising nostalgia, it's the 'way' to end. If sometimes I hang out with my chef buddies for a 'cook off', this is gonna be a Sunday of a 'shoot-off'.

Of course we have to have a variety. I invited a classmate of mine, Achala, who thought that my blog was poetic?! If you ever get to Wellington and be in the hands of Achala, you'd be rather very safe indeed. She has a great sensitivity to your sickie needs. I think Achala had tasted my food ages ago at my old kitchen in Dunedin, NZ. I hope this time around is better for her too.

And then there's Darren and John, we've been in the same health science first year class back half a decade ago. Since then we've parted ways but been running in to each other on and off. They are serious bunch of blast with quirky hilarious critical comments about anything and everything. Surely they're in the list!

We kinda experimented on taking some cool moving pictures for the night. Just to add a little bit of an 'uhm!' to whatever it'd turn out to be. I was actually hosting a little masterclass on how to make a damn authentic Spaghetti Carbonara - a chance to redeem myself for Adri and the rest of the world. Recipes of them will come one future post at a time; some of which is recorded in video. So feel free to mock me and try the recipes at home!

I'm gonna start with an embarrassingly simple recipe as a practice video-take for the crew before the main event. It's a hot chocolate recipe. Feel free to add anything to the recipe; like liquor, chili powder, etc. Music's 'Take Five' by Dave Brubeck.

Hot Chocolate
serves 1

a handful of milk chocolate, chopped
3/4 cup milk
1 ts cocoa powder (optional)
1/2 cinnamon quill (optional)
1 ts chestnut powder (optional)

1. Heat milk and cinnamon to boiling. Meanwhile, add the rest to a bowl. Pour and whisk in the hot milk to chocolate until smooth. Serve!

PS. It's Sunday, why bother shaving whilst you can be an Asian Jesus ;P

"Wake up Lazarus!"

  2. Food in the 1st video looks really good. You're all shy in the 2nd one.
    I'll remember the chilli powder for my hot choc next time. :)

  3. I noticed that there was no toe tag on the patient on the gurney. I believe that that must be a good thing. LOL Chestnut powder is something that I am not to familiar with. I will have to google it. Enjoyed my visit this evening.

  4. LOL!!! Melissa said the same thing as Selba in her comment on Facebook. Ummmm...hot choc? Not for me, too heaty and makes me sleepy - probably psychological as when young, I would drink hot milk or Milo in place of meals whenever I was sick.

  5. Enjoyed your videos.
    Last pict... epic! Haha

  6. I enjoyed both videos, I think your plating is exquisite, as always (and that dessert...well, it's killing me to watch). Yes, I noticed the scrubs was still on in the 2nd video. Was that right before or after you got the cadaver to take your picture? ;-)

  7. Really loved the candid shots of you! Seriously, is that a cadaver...lol I also noticed it doesn't have a toe tag, but he is very blue! Haven't had a chance to watch the video...will def later:-). Hot Chocolate with real chocolate and high quality cocao and whole milk is the best...you always do things right!!

  8. I can't wait to read about the Spaghetti Carbonara - I need help with that dish, never tastes like I want it to. And I love hot chocolate, so I will take this recipe as a starter!

  9. Love the last pic! It's just so funny! Hahaha

  10. Your last photo seriously cracks me up! When do we get to see the carbonara video? The authentic version has got to be one of my favorite pasta dishes. It's full of flavor. Your friends are lucky to enjoy that delicious menu!

  12. @Michelle,
    Not allowed to say if it is or isn't. The picture is not legal. ;P

    @Selba,
    They are really comfortable. I take(steal...borrow) a few to sleep on, as a pajama, during winter time. Free laundry too!

    @Germaine,
    I wasn't shy. I was just waiting and waiting for anyone to converse back during the shoot. Plus you should try making one, it takes forever to wait whilst shooting. Chili powder or blackpepper is a treat for the winter choc.

    @Susan,
    No toe tag... I may be fetching for the kidneys? For paying up my medschool fees. Hahaha
    Chestnut flour/powder is rather a rarity. That's why I mentioned it was a 'treat' for my buds. There is a company in NZ who exports them to China, but even in here it costs about 15 US for that packet in the video... pricey!

    @Arthur,
    You see a lot of nurses in the morning and afternoon wearing scrubs to go home. It's clean, comfortable and free laundry!
    People who has problem with hot choc are too old inside and outside. Hahaha... like my dad!

    @Amy,
    Thank You! Credits to Edi Go for the last pict.

    @Maya,
    Thank You! Did you notice how I failed to quenelle my mousse and ended up having to pipe it cos it's too damn soft(first time making em)? Hahaha. I'm not allowed to say much about the 'body/feet' events. Hahaha!

    @Kay,
    The feet surely are convincing, aren't they? But are they real? Did I took off the tags? Hahaha!
    The videos aren't too informative, mostly just about marking around. So you're not missing out much. I love the shots too, it's from Surya/Adri. Thank You!

    @Erin,
    Great news! It's coming soon, the video just finished being edited, Plus! the recipe is super simple! So I'm expecting you to try it ;D Cheers!

    @Lyn,
    Ow! I am not shy, what's with everyone thinking the shyness. Hahaha. I was just uhm not sure what to do. Hahah. I love the last pict too! Thanks!

    @Jessica,
    Laugh away, I am laughing with you too :D
    I guess the caption helped?
    You'll get to see the spagh soon, just around the corner. Let me get set up in Korea first, I'm in Taipei... doing foodie trip at the moment. Next week ay;) I am lucky to have talented friends too!

    @Alice,
    I expect to see shadow behind me, otherwise that's even scarier. Hahaha. The drinks are just a play around. Dessert... well a bit more work. Thanks!

  22. Dearest pierre, food looks really good...one of my Mister's favorite food to make! But the last photo of you and "your friend" creeps me up a little. I guess it probly has a lot to do with all the horror movies ive been watching lately. Have a lovely merry happy mid-week and love to you.

  23. Thank you Jacqueline!
    I saw a freaky real shrunken mummy today. That was scary! hahaha. "my friend"? Or is it?
    You have an awesome week too!

  24. Pierre, I finally watchd the videos:-). I never thought about it, but you have the cutest accent!! I have a Japanese friend that now lives in England and she also has an accent. It always makes me smile when Asians have accents like that and not typical Asian accent;-). Great job on the videos!

  25. Hi Kay, it's almost as my natural accent. I was slightly stuttered to find how to make hot choc and talk heaps. Hehehe.
    I haven't seen much of me with speakin in English before, it's quite an eye-opening moment. Credits to Adri and Edi for the video! Thanks!
